“Everybody else will try to sell you that one thing that is going to fix it all. They're not geared toward the soil side of this industry like Ag Spectrum is. So it's pretty refreshing."
In the heart of Montana, Jerry and Brandon Philipps have cultivated a legacy of resilience through a decades-long commitment to soil health. Their journey is a testament to the power of patience, consistency, and systems-based farming. By embracing a long-term strategy, the Philipps family has transformed their land into a model of productivity and sustainability, proving that meaningful change takes time and the right support.
Building a Soil Health Strategy That Lasts
Jerry Philipps began no-till farming in 1982, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable approach. But it wasn’t until 2007, when the family adopted Ag Spectrum's Maximum Farming System, that they began to see measurable improvements. With a focus on cover crops and tailored nutrient management, their soil began to show signs of life. Third-party testing confirmed increases in organic matter and biological activity, validating their commitment to a systems-based approach.
Validation Through Science
A USDA EQUIP cover crop study revealed striking results: the Philipps’ fields demonstrated biological activity and nutrient availability well above regional benchmarks. These findings were proof that the strategy works. Softer, more porous soil and improved root mass now support healthier plants and greater resilience, even in Montana’s challenging climate.
Organic Matter: The Game Changer
Despite years of no-till, Jerry noted that organic matter levels remained stagnant until they implemented the Maximum Farming System. Since then, they’ve seen a full percentage point increase; an achievement that translates directly into better moisture retention, nutrient availability, and overall productivity. One agronomist even remarked that he could identify their fields blindfolded, simply by the superior soil texture.
The Power of Trusted Support
Behind every successful system is a network of support. For the Philipps family, that support comes from Ag Spectrum representatives who show up, walk the fields, and offer honest guidance. Unlike suppliers who rely on remote recommendations, Ag Spectrum’s hands-on approach has built trust and contributed to the family’s long-term success.
“It's helped us tremendously in the organic matter side of things and just soil composition. We're able to handle the stress a lot better than some of the other people that maybe have been no tilling for 10 years and just keep pouring fertilizer on it.” -Brandon Philipps, Conrad, Montana
